Biography
Sam van Dongen

Born (2005) and raised in Utrecht, the Netherlands, Sam van Dongen is a painter, studying at HKU Fine Arts in Utrecht.
Sam van Dongen is a third-year fine art student who primarily paints, draws, and works with cut-and-paste techniques. He creates colorful, cartoonish, and introspective artworks, ranging from oil paintings of footballers to cardboard sculptures of doorhandles. These various disciplines act as puzzle pieces, with the puzzle itself representing the maker's thoughts. His work is driven by a rapid, spontaneous energy that gives rise to unique brushstrokes, playful lines, and expressive colors. Van Dongen employs a process-oriented approach, embracing frayed edges and chance occurrences to infuse the material and the work itself with energy. He draws inspiration and sources base materials from a wide variety of things, finding it all in a love for the everyday, the mundane, and the ordinary. The tone of his work shifts between humorous and deadly serious, yet remains consistent in the depth of feeling it evokes. Van Dongen intends to keep playing and reflecting on the act of play, seeking to share this energy, as he considers it perhaps the most beautiful thing there is.
